The Holy Art of Pruning

"Sanctification often looks less like becoming someone else, and more like surrendering what was never ours to carry."

There comes a quiet threshold in life where you realize you are standing somewhere between who you used to be and who you are becoming.

It is a tender, sacred space—one that is both bittersweet and deeply sanctifying. It is the season where old, worn-out parts of ourselves are gently laid to rest, while long-dormant seeds within us finally find the freedom to surface.

In a world that demands instant results and constant self-invention, this slow middle ground can feel uncomfortable. But if we stay still long enough to observe it, we realize that this is where the real work happens.

It is a holy kind of pruning.

🌾 Laying Down What We Outgrew

So much of who we were in past seasons was shaped by survival. We built defenses, adopted fears, and picked up heavy expectations—striving to hold everything together by our own strength.

But true growth requires us to open our hands and lay those heavy garments down:

  • The Striving: Releasing the exhausting need to prove, perform, or keep pace with expectations that were never meant for us.

  • The Survival Armor: Letting go of the old defense mechanisms and hyper-vigilance that once kept us safe, but now keep us isolated.

  • The Unnecessary Cargo: Surrendering the invisible weight of carrying outcomes, opinions, and responsibilities that belong in higher hands.

A vine cannot bear sweet, abundant fruit if it remains choked by old, dead wood. The pruning hurts, yes—but it is never meant for destruction. It is a loving refinement designed to make room for deeper roots, stronger branches, and a far clearer vision.

🕯️ Sitting in the In-Between

Transformation is rarely swift or flashy. It happens quietly, layer by layer, day by day, in the unglamorous spaces of daily life.

It is learning to sit comfortably in the in-between—that uncomfortable space where the old has ended, but the full picture of the new has not yet fully bloomed. Rather than rushing through the wilderness to reach the next horizon, we can choose to embrace the quiet beauty of the process.

We do not have to force ourselves into a new mold. We simply have to yield to the hand of the Gardener, trusting that what is being stripped away is making space for something enduring, honest, and whole.

A Gentle Thought for Your Journey

What old armor, fear, or heavy expectation are you being invited to lay down in this season? Can you give yourself permission to sit in the quiet in-between tonight, trusting the pruning taking place within your soul?

Warmly,
